great post, julia!!! i felt like i was there that last night(i even felt tired like i had been there all night after reading it :-). i made it to grand a few times after the baby shower you gave me there - of course to show them the bun that was in the oven and how zidane had grown - but not enough as i would have liked to or probably should have. i think you did enough partying and hanging out there for both of us, and that at least makes me feel good . . . that they did have support . . . they did have a base. i don't know why they are closing but as new businesses continue to spring up like (like flowers or weeds depending on your perception) in these hardcore economic times carmen and marc can take comfort in the fact that they fought the good fight for 5 years.

Great as$ post, Julia! I was surely there in spirit on Friday night and really wish now that I had made the trek. I live in Harlem and for a time in 2005 I was a Grand regular-- every Friday night! Train there and cab home and the cool thing--so many instances I was able to split a cab with other Harlem folk who had also made the journey to revel in pure unadultered pleasure (Shola, Vincent, Greg). And grrl when you say it was the biggest crowd you had ever seen there, I can't imagine how deep folk were rolling! On New Year's Eve the crowds would be ridiculous and so I guess, well I guess, 'Grand' was more than appropriate a name because it would seem that is how they went out.. with a grand bang!!

Gee, Julia, I feel like I missed out! I’d only visited there twice–once for brunch, and another for cocktails when the rarest-of-rarities happened: a completed stranger bought me a pretty red cocktail– just because!

I didn’t live close enough (although my sister did) –and the G train was waaay too unreliable–for me to become a regular. But thanks for letting me know it a bit better. –PJ

Ya brought me to tears... It's a sad event when a business closes, especially one that has meant so much to so many. But as they says, when one door closes...
